Malpractice cost ‘El Sandocan’ his life during the Christmas period. The vet has now been convicted.
The beautiful black Arabian “El Sandocan” was the pride of a Carinthian rider. When the successful competition horse caught a cold, his owner immediately had him treated by a well-known horse specialist.
Then the sad news
But just a few weeks later – at Christmas 2020 – the twelve-year-old gelding had to be euthanized at the University Hospital in Vienna to spare him further suffering: the Carinthian veterinarian had had the horse in his stable, but had not recognized his scrofula, which is typical for horses that are still being treated, as the legal expert also massively criticized.
“The defendant has made a diagnostic error,” Klagenfurt judge Sarah-Maria Ritzmaier ruled. “The doctor is responsible for diagnosis, information and advice – the principles of human medicine essentially also apply to veterinary medicine!”
The grieving owner of ‘El Sandocan’ will now receive a total of around €27,000 in the unusual malpractice lawsuit. “It was a long fight and unfortunately it won’t bring me my horse back. “But you see that you can take action against medical errors and be successful,” the 44-year-old told the “Krone”.
