In the Russian-controlled areas of Ukraine, the number of graves has increased significantly, according to an NGO. An evaluation of satellite images and ground photos shows, among other things, many new graves at a cemetery in the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol, the American organization Center for Information Resilience announced on Friday. Ukraine estimates that about 22,000 civilians have been killed in the city where fighting took place for weeks.
The NGO analyzed satellite images and photos from online platforms of graves in six Ukrainian areas, two of which were occupied by Russian troops and four in southern Ukraine are still under Russian control. According to the report, numerous new graves have appeared at Starokrymske Cemetery in Mariupol since the Russian army took control of the city in March.
About 1,000 new graves were discovered between October 2021 and March. About 1,140 new graves were discovered between late March and mid-May, ie after Russia invaded Ukraine. From mid-May to the end of June, there were more than 1,700. The figures cannot be independently verified.
NGO: “Increasing number of graves”
The images also showed makeshift graves near Mariupol. The “growing number of graves” in Ukraine, “especially in the occupied territories,” illustrates the number of civilian casualties after the Russian invasion, according to the Center for Information Resilience.
