Glawischnig’s Kickl Secret: “We kissed!”

It is no secret that former federal spokeswoman for the Greens, Eva Glawischnig, and FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl went to the same school desk in Spittal an der Drau. They were competitors in the election for class representative, but Glawischnig, whose family was close to the liberal camp, usually won the battle for the office. Both Kickl, who comes from a rather apolitical working-class family, and Glawischnig were considered rhetorical talents even when they were at school – their essays were regularly read by the German teacher…

Years later they would see each other again in high politics. Glawischnig led the left-wing eco-party for many years, Herbert Kickl would drift to the right and lead the FPÖ to the top with controversial campaign slogans like “Daham instead of Islam”. Left-wing observers in particular wonder with a wink: could a kiss in his youth turn Herbert Kickl into a leftist..?

It happened in the early 80’s
Both were vehemently silent about their school days together. Glawischnig recently said in a conversation with Katia Wagner: “Even young Kickl has a right to privacy!” But now she reveals the long-kept secret on krone.tv: “We kissed when we were very young!” in the 1980s, when they were 14, they allegedly played bottle spin at their birthday party. And then it came to the kiss between Kickl and Glawischnig…

“I’m really embarrassed”
Could the two have become as unequal as the Tyrolean SPÖ leader Georg Dornauer and the Italian right-wing politician Alessia Ambrosi? “I appreciate him as an intelligent person. But at some point we couldn’t talk to each other anymore,” says Glawischnig when asked by “Das Duell” moderator Gerhard Koller. However, the kiss doesn’t seem to be particularly well remembered because, as the ex-Green says, “It’s really embarrassing for me!”
