In Niger, the party of overthrown President Mohamed Bazoum has now called for nationwide mobilization. Earlier, a former rebel leader spoke out for opposition to the new military government. “Niger is the victim of a tragedy orchestrated by people charged with protecting the country,” it said in a statement.
According to the deposed president’s party, Bazoum and his family are being held in their residence in inhumane conditions. There is no running water and no electricity. The president doesn’t get fresh groceries either. He and his family should be released and the whole country mobilized, a statement from the PNDS-Tarayya party said on Wednesday.
Former rebel leader Rhissa Ag Boula had previously called for resistance to the junta and launched a corresponding movement. The Council of Resistance (CRR) for the Republic wants to reinstate the ousted Bazoum, who has been under house arrest since taking power on July 26.
New Movement: “Use whatever resources are necessary”
The CRR will use “all necessary means” to prevent the military from denying the people free choice. So far, the junta has rejected diplomatic offers from African, US and UN envoys for a resolution to the conflict.
Ag Boula played a leading role in the uprisings of the Tuareg, a nomadic ethnic group in the desert north of Niger, in the 1990s and 2000s. Like many other rebels, he was integrated into the government under Bazoum and his predecessor Issoufou. Without the Tuareg, the army would have a hard time controlling the north.
On Thursday, the 15 heads of state of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will meet in the Nigerien capital Abuja to discuss the current situation (see video above). Among other things, there is a possible military intervention to restore the constitution. The military governments of neighboring Mali and Burkina Faso warned the United Nations and ECOWAS about such an event.
