Nearly 42 years after the attack on the Bologna train station on August 2, 1980, which left 85 dead and more than 200 injured, former right-wing extremist Paolo Bellini was sentenced on Wednesday to life imprisonment. Bellini, 68, was found guilty of being the fifth bomber and joined the four already convicted former members of the far-right Nuclei Armati Rivoluzionari organization.
In addition to Bellini, former Carabinieri captain Piergiorgio Segatel was sentenced to six years in prison for misconducting investigations. All five ex-right extremists convicted of the attack have protested their innocence but have admitted to committing other terrorist crimes.

The Bologna attack remains the deadliest terrorist attack in Italy since World War II. It is still unclear who the real originators of the attack are. It is still assumed that right-wing extremist circles around the deceased ex-head of the secret Masonic lodge P2, Licio Gelli, and members of the secret services wanted to create the climate for a coup with the attack.
The question of who actually placed the 25 kilogram suitcase with the bomb in the waiting room of the train station remains unanswered.
August 2 was declared a day of remembrance for the victims in Italy. The damaged parts of the building were rebuilt, but the floor and a deep crack in the wall remained unchanged as a reminder of the attack. In addition, the station clock has since been set at 10:25 am, the exact time of the explosion.
