After two weeks, there is sad certainty in the Tyrolean region of Ausserfern: The body of the alpinist discovered by mountain rescue drones on the Plattberg in the municipality of Lermoos at the end of July has now been autopsied and the man’s identity has been clarified.
Accordingly, the dead man is a 33-year-old Croat who has been missing near Bichlbach since December 28. 14 days later, relatives of the holidaymaker sounded the alarm and reported the missing to the police. His car was eventually discovered at the church in Lähn. Multiple searches yielded no results. From May, the drone squadron of the Ehrwald mountain rescue service began search flights.
In mid-July, the Alpine police discovered a backpack. About ten days later, a body was finally found lying in a gully 300 meters north below the summit of the Hochschrutte (2247 m), still partially buried in the snow. The police helicopter Libelle found the body shortly afterwards and the suspicion that it was the missing Croat already existed at that time.
Alpine accident as cause of death
The results of the autopsy were announced Thursday afternoon. “According to the result of the identification measures carried out, it has now been established that it is the 33-year-old Croatian citizen who has been missing since December 28, 2022,” the police confirmed. It is suspected that a mountain accident is the cause of death – the man may have crashed.
