Major strike by Interpol against the worst abuse sites on the net: an operator was also investigated in Austria. An operator from China had registered nine abusive sites with an Austrian internet service.
Operation Narsil (named after the mighty sword from The Lord of the Rings) ran from December 2021 to July this year. The Internet’s worst child abuse sites with “real” victims under the age of 13 have been targeted by security authorities worldwide.
The goal was also to stop the revenue model behind it – ice-cold criminal and worth billions – with the physical and often lifelong mental suffering of children. “Every time someone clicks on these images, they practically walk into a crime scene. Identifying and removing these sites will also prevent the abused children from being victimized again,” said Interpol Secretary General Jürgen Stock.
In Austria, as a result of the major action, a computer network of 161 (!) IP addresses was also investigated, which gave ‘customers’ access to the most disgusting photos and videos. Investigations by the domestic Federal Criminal Investigation Department uncovered a website operator from China continuing its criminal activities through Singapore.
Abuse sites of the web, 311 victims identified
The suspect had registered nine abuse sites with an Austrian internet service! In addition, the joint operation “New Hope” with US Homeland Security identified 311 victims of child abuse, some of them in long-ago cold cases.
