The severe storms that have raged in Carinthia have taken their toll. They left a trail of destruction in their wake across the country. Emergency services are still in continuous operation. Residents’ vehicles are now ‘shipped’ across the Drau by military ferry.
The more than 120 soldiers of the engineer battalion from Villach and the construction/engineer platoon of the Carinthian military command work tirelessly to clear the storm damage in the hard-hit areas. As reported, the 50-ton ferry between Rottenstein and Guntschach was able to become operational on Friday thanks to the army.
“First of all, personnel and heavy equipment for power and avalanche control in the country, as well as the equipment of the pioneers, were shipped to Guntschach via the Drau to build the necessary access to the ferry. For this, so-called folding roads were used one after the other to smooth the way – and to allow the supply of the place that could not be reached by land, “says the army. “At the same time, soldiers were clearing a landslide.”
Passenger ferry service has already started
After the passenger ferry service has already started, the vehicles of the residents of Guntschach should be able to be transferred to Rottenstein from Saturday afternoon.
While the Black Hawk helicopter has since been withdrawn from the storm mission in Carinthia, the Agusta Bell helicopter continues to make its rounds for reconnaissance and transport flights.
