The long weekend will also cause more traffic on the Salzburger Tauernautobahn in the coming days.
It was Saturday the expected traffic jam in the travel weekend on the Tauernautobahn. Numerous holidaymakers went on holiday to the south via the A10. The motorists’ club ÖAMTC reports delays along the entire route. “There were also the usual breakdowns and an electric car lost power,” says Gerhard Hollitscher. He was on the road with his motorcycle as a traffic jam advisor and helper for the ÖAMTC. Fortunately, no serious accidents occurred on the important main traffic route until Saturday afternoon. Blockages would inevitably lead to more evasive traffic – despite blockages.
This time there were also waiting times when driving north. Traffic was particularly slow in Pongau. Later at the border on the Walserberg, some travelers had to expect longer waiting times. “The standing column was up to three kilometers long,” Hollitscher reports.
Further checks at the German border
With this length, the traffic jam will extend beyond the Salzburg interchange. From that moment on, the German authorities should have reacted and relaxed the controls considerably, so that traffic started again. Motorists entering the western autobahn were then able to travel almost freely around the capital again.
Long weekend and Italian vacation
The long travel weekend shouldn’t be over yet though. Many use the Zwickeltag for a short holiday and start the return journey no later than Tuesday, the public holiday.
Another factor: the Italians celebrate “Ferragosto” around August 15 and traditionally like to drive to Salzburg to enjoy a short break.
