A spectacular accident occurred Friday morning in the Swiss border town of Au (Canton of St. Gallen). The black Mercedes of a couple of pensioners was so unluckily “shot down” by a 34-year-old’s car that it ended up in a canal with its occupants.
A 34-year-old drove his car from a multi-storey car park to the intersection with Espenstrasse. At the intersection, there was a collision with a 72-year-old’s black Mercedes traveling towards Widnau, with the 34-year-old’s car crashing into the right-hand side of the Mercedes.
Lost control after crash
Due to the collision, the Mercedes driver, who had his 73-year-old partner on board, lost control of his vehicle, which then rolled from an embankment to a canal and only came to a stop in the water. The two occupants were soaking wet, but were able to get out of the car otherwise unharmed.
Total wreck recovered from canal
However, according to the St. Gallen cantonal police, the Mercedes was a total loss and had to be removed from the water by a towing company. According to initial findings, the canal should not have been polluted by the accident.
