At least seven civilians were killed on Sunday by Russian artillery fire on villages in southern Ukraine’s Kherson region, authorities said. This includes a baby who is just 23 days old, Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said on Telegram. The Russian military said it had again shot down Ukrainian drones over the Kursk and Belgorod regions on the border with Ukraine.
The little girl’s parents also died in the village of Schyroka Balka. A twelve-year-old son of the family was initially seriously injured in a hospital. The boy, who was pulled from the rubble of a house, later died in hospital, the Kherson region prosecutor’s office said in a telegram.
At least 500 children killed in the war
Two adults were killed in the neighboring village of Stanislav, the head of Ukraine’s presidential office, Andriy Yermak, wrote. “The enemy continues to shell the Kherson region.” The villages are located on the northern bank of the Dnipro River, where it merges with the Black Sea. Last fall, Russian troops withdrew from this area. However, it is still within range of their artillery.
At least 500 children fell victim to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, according to the ongoing count of the Ukrainian judiciary. The Prosecutor General’s Office announced this on Sunday in the capital Kiev. In addition, nearly 1,100 children suffered injuries of varying degrees, the authority wrote on Telegram. She pointed out that the count was incomplete. Investigations are being conducted in the combat zone, in the areas liberated from Ukraine and in the areas occupied by Russian troops, and other cases are being sought.
Most of the children killed and injured were in the eastern areas of Donetsk and Kharkiv close to the front, followed by the Kiev capital region and Kherson in the south. The latest known case was an eight-year-old boy who, according to Ukrainian sources, was fatally injured in a rocket attack on western Ukraine on Friday.
Warning shot on cargo ship
Russian forces shot down at least four Ukrainian drones over western Russia, according to the defense ministry in Moscow. One drone was intercepted and destroyed over Kursk Oblast, and three more over Belgorod Oblast. Kursk and Belgorod both border Ukraine. In recent weeks, several suspected Ukrainian combat drones have flown into the Russian capital Moscow and caused material damage there.
A Russian warship fired a warning shot at a cargo ship near Ukraine’s Black Sea coast, the defense ministry in Moscow said. The ministry said the Sukru Okan, a ship flying the Palau flag, was in the southwestern Black Sea. The ship was en route to the Ukrainian port of Izmail.
The Russian patrol vessel Vasily Bykov fired the warning shot after the captain of the Sukru Okan failed to respond to a request to stop for an inspection. “In order to stop the ship by force, automatic weapons fire was opened as a warning,” the defense ministry said. The Russian army boarded the cargo ship using a Ka-29 helicopter. After inspection by the Russian army, the ship sails on.
