German Environment Minister Steffi Lemke (Greens) wants to ban the import of hunting trophies. This is now angering the Botswana government as it promotes poverty and poaching. In protest, the African state wants to donate 20,000 elephants to Germany.
Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi told Bild that thanks to successful species protection, his country now has more than 130,000 elephants, more than any other African country. Due to overpopulation, 8,000 elephants have already been given to neighboring country Angola. Mozambique has yet to assemble its contingent. “And that is exactly how we want to offer such a gift to the Federal Republic of Germany. We will not take no for an answer,” Masisi said.
Must be picked up
The animals should be rounded up and left to live in the wild in Germany. The president said he wanted to “find out how Ms. Lemke handles it.” The Germans must ‘live with the animals as you try to tell us’, that is, without hunting. After all, the weather there is ‘bad enough for them’.
Minister invited
In Botswana, elephants attack and trample people, destroy crops and destroy villages. Hunting is an important means of regulating populations and is sustainable. There is also talk of “racist tendencies”.
Botswana makes 40 percent of its land available for wildlife. “It is very easy to sit in Berlin and have an opinion about our affairs in Botswana,” President Masisi said. That’s why he invited Lemke to take a look at the local nature conservation.
