A region in Canada is currently causing a stir with a rather unusual campaign. Instead of the most beautiful and best maintained lawns, the ugliest will be rewarded in the future. In addition to vouchers, there are also discounts.
A bone-dry lawn that keeps turning yellow? What worries many garden owners during the summer drought would be cause for pride for the people of Canada’s far west. Because – after recently announced restrictions on water consumption – there are now prices for the ugliest lawn.
Several Vancouver-area communities have asked citizens to send or post photos of their dried-out properties, Canadian media reported.
“We’re Having a Little Fun”
For example, in the small town of Port Coquitlam, according to broadcaster CBC, there are three shopping vouchers worth 100 Canadian dollars (67.61 euros) each or a voucher of 150 dollars for a garden party to be won. The communities of Abbotsford, Mission, and Chilliwack offer discounts ranging from $50 to $150 off water bills or the same amount in gift cards.
“We’re having a little bit of fun with it,” CBC quoted Port Coquitlam public works manager Dave Kidd as saying. However, the authorities will not put up with someone continuing to water their lawn despite a ban that recently came into effect. Then fines of up to 500 Canadian dollars threaten.
