A home explosion in a suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, killed five and injured many on Saturday. According to emergency services, a child is one of the victims. Two other houses caught fire.
The blast and resulting fireball destroyed three homes in the suburb of Plum and damaged at least a dozen others, authorities said. Rescuers found people trapped under the rubble and took three victims to a hospital.
Two of the three people have since been released, the third was still in a critical condition in hospital, police said.
Adjacent buildings also sustained heavy damage
For five victims – four adults and a teenager – all help came too late. Her remains were found at the scene of the accident. The incident apparently resulted in an explosion in a house – two neighboring buildings then also went up in flames. The blast wave ripped out some of the windows of the other houses nearby.
So far it is unclear what caused the explosion. The gas was temporarily shut off in the residential area. The investigation into the cause could take several months.
