Every stone was turned over for 13 years. But even after “the most intensive joint investigation work” by the police and the prosecutor’s office, the murderer of the German banker’s wife Maria Bögerl could not be identified. Now police work has been halted.
The police headquarters in Ulm and the public prosecutor’s office in Ellwangen announced on Monday that no further investigation is currently being conducted. However, the case will be continued at the police headquarters in Ulm to leave all necessary detailed knowledge of the facts in experienced hands. Since there is no statute of limitations on the murder charge, the proceedings can resume at any time if there are new investigations. The investigative services still have a DNA trace that can clearly be attributed to a male perpetrator.
Kidnapping, botched ransom delivery and discovery of the body
Maria Bögerl, the wife of the then Heidenheim savings bank boss Thomas Bögerl, was kidnapped on May 12, 2010 from her home in Heidenheim (state of Baden-Württemberg). On the same day, her husband received a call from a stranger demanding a ransom of 300,000 euros – but the delivery failed. At the beginning of June 2010, a hiker found Maria Bögerl’s body on the edge of a forest, a few kilometers from the Bögerl house.
As if that wasn’t tragic enough, Bögerl’s husband hanged himself 14 months later. The 56-year-old also left a suicide note. This was aimed at the still living children Christoph (25) and Carina (28).
