Flights canceled – Etna eruption: Catania airport closed

In Sicily, the Etna volcano has again spewed spectacular fire and ash. Catania airport was supposed to be closed on Monday morning.

The airport said the runway was contaminated with volcanic ash and was therefore closed. Initially, no machines could take off or land until morning. Catania airport had to be closed for several days due to a fire in July.

Mount Etna has erupted several times in recent weeks
Mount Etna, which is located in the east of the island, has erupted repeatedly in recent months. For the people living around the mountain, which is over 3,300 meters high, there is usually no danger from the eruptions.

The area around the volcano is a natural park and popular with many tourists. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013.
