Trouble with the Distress Call – Thunderstorms endangered climbers on the Glockner

Date:

An approaching thunderstorm on the Großglockner in East Tyrol on Monday became fatal for two mountaineers: Due to the unfavorable conditions, their descent was delayed – night fell. And then there were also reception problems during the emergency call.

The two Germans (32 and 34 years old) had already climbed the normal route to the top of the Großglockner. As we returned to the valley, a thunderstorm suddenly broke out. “This slowed their descent and night fell,” police said.

Slipped on bare ice
But that’s not all: in the area of the Eisleitel at an altitude of about 3640 meters above sea level, the 34-year-old climber slipped on the partially bare ice around 10 p.m. and slid over steep terrain. Fortunately he was unharmed.

The two alpinists were apparently no longer able to descend into the valley alone. So they made a distress call. Because it did not want to work properly due to reception problems, the 34-year-old climbed further up Archduke Johann Hut. However, the man got lost and fell on the Hofmannskees riddled with columns.

Mountain rescuers and mountain guides as rescuers
“A member of the Kals am Großglockner mountain rescue service, who happened to be present at the Erzherzog-Johann hut, eventually organized the rescue of the two mountaineers in distress with five mountain guides who were also at the hut,” the police continued. The salvage was finally completed around 11:30 p.m.
