A kayaking accident took place on the Lammer in Scheffau on Saturday evening. A large contingent of emergency services from the Red Cross, fire brigade, mountain rescue, police and water rescue were present until late at night. The boater’s body was finally found Sunday morning.
On Sunday morning, helpers found the dead man near the exit of the gorge. Rescuing the dead man was difficult and took hours. According to the water rescue team, the gorge at this point is narrow and the terrain steep.
Kayaker hit rocks
According to police, the deceased was a member of a group of Czech kayakers. At a violent and narrowed point in the Lammerklamg, the Czech hit a rock and was pulled under water. He was unable to swim back to the surface from the boat.
Search temporarily stopped
The search was called off around 10 p.m. on Saturday due to the high water level, explained Markus Gewolf, spokesman for the Bischofshofen water rescue service. “The high temperatures and snow meant there was a lot of meltwater in the gorge.”
The water level then receded overnight and the search continued as planned in the morning. The helpers had already been able to limit the search radius. “He was where we thought he was,” Gewolf said.
