The storms made for a busy Tuesday evening in Upper Austria. The Salzkammergut and the Innviertel in particular were hit by lightning strikes, mudslides, flooded cellars and fallen trees. At the Attersee, the water rescue service warned ships about the storm.
As predicted, thunderstorms moved through the Salzkammergut and the Innviertel on Tuesday evening. The wind reached speeds of up to 70 km/h – this is within the normal range of such thunderstorms, according to GeoSphere Austria meteorologists. Most of the precipitation fell on the border with Salzburg.
Water rescue warned of storm
The Litzlberg water rescue service received a storm warning for the Attersee area around 6 p.m. “We were able to warn the people on the water in good time,” says local manager Alexander Leitner. A fishing boat was still on the lake at the onset of the storm, but made it ashore unharmed. “And a sailor waits for the weather on the lake so that he does not damage anything when entering the harbor,” Leitner reports to the “Krone” on Tuesday evening.
The emergency services were also in demand on the Irrsee and the Wolfgangsee.
Fire brigade in continuous operation
The fire department was constantly on the go. At the time of going to press, the Floriani had been called for numerous severe weather warnings. According to the headquarters of the national fire service, the range is large: lightning strikes, basements under water, mud flows, trees that have fallen on roads.
