Three water rescue teams were busy for about four hours on Monday evening: the sailing boat of two seniors capsized on Lake Attersee. “When we arrived, the boat was only a few inches out of the water,” says lifeguard Alexander Leitner. The small ship was lifted out of the lake with lifting balloons.
Two elderly people used the sunny Monday for a trip on the Attersee. In the evening hours, their small sailboat capsized. The cause is still unclear, possible causes of the accident are a gust of wind or a turning maneuver. The two seniors tried to get the ship upright themselves, but then had to call the water rescue service for help.
Balloons pulled the boat out of the water
“We discovered that the boat was almost sinking,” said Alexander Leitner, local manager of the Litzlberg water rescue service. Divers attached two lift bags to the sinking sailboat, which lifted the craft back to the water’s surface. In this way, the specialists were finally able to tow the ship to the owner’s jetty.
Use until dark
“It was a long mission,” says water rescuer Leitner. It took him almost four hours with nine colleagues. By the time the operation was finished around 10 p.m., it was already dark. The difficulty: The boat was in constant danger of sinking, taking with it the lifeguards, some of whom were holding lines to the sailboat.
In the end, the rescue operation ended well. The two capsized seniors – a man and a woman – were mildly hypothermic, but were otherwise unharmed, according to Leitner.
