Heavy storms broke out again in large parts of Austria on Wednesday evening. For example, strong thunderstorms in Upper Austria caused mudslides and fallen trees on the streets.
A violent thunderstorm also passed over Salzburg, triggering several large-scale operations. Especially in Saalfelden, Mittersill, Maria Alm and Rauris. Landslides and flooded basements made operations even more difficult. Extensive roadblocks ensued. Most precipitation fell on the border with Salzburg last night.
Bridge torn away in Tyrol
There were also mudslides in various parts of Tyrol and many fire brigades were deployed. A young man (18) was injured in Kirchbichl when a tree suddenly collided with his car while driving. Fortunately, the other occupants were unharmed. The storm also caused major damage in the Tyrolean Stubaital. Huge bodies of water have ripped away a bridge over the Omesbach.
The Tyrolean police also reported a landslide in the Kaunertal, which moved the glacier road at the height of the Rödgarten Canal. The road was cleared four hours later.
Large-scale operations in Upper Austria
Lightning strikes, mudslides, flooded cellars and fallen trees also kept emergency services busy in Upper Austria. The Salzkammergut and the Innviertel were particularly affected. The fire department was in constant use.
In Buchenort, a restaurant had to be evacuated and 40 guests had to be brought to safety because of a landslide. Fortunately there were no injuries. In a very short time there were more than 20 floods in Upper Austria.
Next thunderstorm approaching
Thunderstorms may form again in large parts of the country in the coming days, some of them stronger. Especially in the east of the country, the chance of thunderstorms is increasing considerably compared to the days before. Weather experts also expect heavy rain and thunderstorms in the mountains of Styria. Yet it remains warm with a maximum of 31 degrees in summer.
