The public prosecutor’s office is now investigating the cause of the alleged dead sand martins in Tillmitsch in southern Styria. A report is ready, a lawyer speaks of “criminal barbarity”.
In June, a sand martin colony, including eggs and young birds, was destroyed in Tillmitsch. Not only animal rights activists were outraged. As reported, the area was razed due to the planned construction of a campsite, with the intention of avoiding costly species protection regulations.
Assessment is now complete
Since then, it has been the authorities’ turn: “The commissioned report, including the renovation proposals, is now ready. The person concerned has until August 31 to submit a statement,” says Wolfgang Klemencic from the district administration of Leibnitz.
The South Styrian self-made millionaire Alois Köhrer is the owner of the said area. He emphasized to the “Krone” that he was not aware of any guilt: “I had nothing to do with the dredging work. They were commissioned by the company from which I bought the land.”
There were briefings beforehand
There is no doubt that Köhrer was aware of the strictly protected animals and the associated conditions: environmental lawyer Ute Pöllinger himself witnessed the accompanying educational talks.
The public prosecutor’s office is now also involved in the case. Lawyer and animal lover Gerald Ruhri has filed a statement of fact based on the Krone reports. The lawyer says the landowner will not be able to get his head around the excavator driver: “The fact of the deliberate damage to the environment is in the room.” If the commissioning company did not know the background, it was instrumentalized for the destruction of the colony.
