A German family experienced frightening moments in Bad Bleiberg (Carinthia) on Tuesday after their two daughters (19 and 7) did not return from the walk as agreed.
The four Germans, who have a second residence in Carinthia, left together on Tuesday to the top of Kobesnock. On the way back, the parents climbed to the Wertschacher Alm, their two daughters aged 19 and seven only wanted to come to the hut a little later. But for some unknown reason, the girls left the marked trail after the ridge area and entered increasingly steep terrain.
Sister saved from falling
“Three times the 19-year-old saved her younger sister from the cliffs by pulling her back with the last of her strength,” says the Villach Mountain Rescue Service. At an altitude of 1330 meters, the two got no further and made a distress call.
Also, the innkeeper alerted emergency services around 6:50 p.m. after the girls failed to arrive at their parents’ cabin as originally agreed.
Blessing in disguise
Eight men from the Villach mountain rescue team were deployed with the support of the Libelle police helicopter. “We boarded both in Nötsch and Bad Bleiberg and met the crew of the Libelle in Bleiberg-Kreuth. If necessary, we would have taken the helicopter to the girls,” says mountain rescuer Arnulf Müller.
But luckily, the police helicopter was able to locate the two quickly and get the seven-year-old and her older sister to the valley unharmed before dark through a rope rescue.
