Following the indictment of former US President Donald Trump in the state of Georgia, information about the jury involved in the trial has been circulating on the internet. “We are aware that jurors’ personal information has been released on several platforms,” the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday.
“We are working with law enforcement agencies at the local, state and national levels to determine the source of threats,” it said. Television channels CNN and NBC had previously reported that the names, addresses, photos and social media accounts of several jurors had been published on right-wing websites.
The court only publishes names of jurors
In Fulton County, where Trump’s indictment was filed, it’s common practice for jurors’ names to be published in court documents, the CNN report said. However, the document does not contain any further personal information such as the addresses of the members of the so-called grand jury. After the publication, there were isolated threats against the jury from alleged Trump supporters on the Internet.
“It’s getting more and more normal…”
“It is becoming increasingly common for ordinary citizens who perform functions essential to our democracy to be threatened with violence by extremist Trump supporters,” Daniel Jones, founder of Advance Democracy, told NBC.
A Texas woman was recently charged with allegedly threatening death to federal judge Tanya Chutkan in a voice message. Chutkan is the chief justice in another trial against Trump in the capital Washington, in which the ex-president is answering in connection with attempted voter fraud and his supporters’ attack on the US Capitol.
