Lock after accident – caravan collides with tunnel wall

A Polish driver lost control of his vehicle due to microsleeping in Salzburg, crashed into the tunnel walls and injured his passenger.

Shortly after midnight on Friday, a serious traffic accident took place in the Tauerntunnel on the Tauernautobahn A10, in which a Pole lost control of his vehicle. At around 1:41 a.m., the 33-year-old driver, accompanied by his 32-year-old wife and their two children, steered his vehicle in the direction of Salzburg.

With 100 km/h through the Tauern tunnel
According to reports, he drove through the Tauerntunnel at a speed of 100 km/h. Shortly before exiting the tunnel, the driver in the municipality of Flachau lost control of his vehicle due to a microsleep. In a bend to the right, he collided with the trailer combination against the left tunnel wall.

The car continued on its way and also hit the right-hand tunnel wall before finally coming to rest in the opposite direction of travel in the fast lane.

Passenger trapped
The passenger was trapped in the passenger seat during the collision and had to be freed by local fire departments. She sustained injuries of an unknown nature and was taken to Schwarzach Hospital after emergency medical treatment by the Red Cross. The driver and two children were not injured.

Hours of shutdown
The accident resulted in total loss of the car and significant property damage to the trailer. Due to the clearance and salvage work, the Tauerntunnel in the direction of Salzburg had to remain closed to all traffic until 3:17 am. The Flachau and Zederhaus fire brigades were on hand to secure the scene of the accident and allow traffic to flow smoothly again.
