A woman showed her creativity when she set fire to the Koran again in the Swedish capital Stockholm: she stopped the action with a fire extinguisher.
According to Swedish media recordings, she ran towards the organizer of the Quran burning near the Iranian embassy on Friday and sprayed the white powder from the fire extinguisher on the man. Burning at his feet was a book believed to be a copy of the Qur’an. The police confirmed the incident.
The woman said she tried to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher. She was arrested for disturbing public order. The person responsible for the action, 37-year-old Iraqi refugee Salwan Momika, together with a comrade-in-arms in Stockholm, has repeatedly set fire to or otherwise violated Korans in recent weeks. This has sparked furious protests in Muslim-dominated countries.
Al Qaeda called for attacks
In view of the Koran burnings in Sweden and also in Denmark, the terror network al-Qaeda called for attacks against the countries in an alleged statement. On Thursday, Sweden’s terror alert level was raised to its second highest level for the first time since 2016.
The motives of Salwan Momika, who came to Sweden several years ago, are unclear. He is being investigated for possible incitement to hatred in the burning of the Koran, including in relation to Friday’s action.
Swedish radio station SVT recently reported that recordings of his time in Iraq had been circulated on social media. They would have to show that he played a leading role in a Christian militia that took part in the fight against the Islamic State terrorist militia. Momika herself told SVT that the Iraqi leadership lied about him. He was a politician, not a militia leader.
