Maintenance on main battle tanks in Ukraine will begin this month, according to the German armaments group Rheinmetall. A workshop in Poland had been planned for a long time. In the end, however, the governments in Berlin and Warsaw – the Polish election campaign probably also played a role – were unable to reach an agreement. So this plan was abandoned.
Among other things, Germany is supplying Leopard main battle tanks to support Ukraine in its defense against Russia. Since wear is high in combat, regular maintenance is important. The head of the Düsseldorf-based group also confirmed his intention to start producing tanks in Ukraine as soon as possible. “It can happen quickly, there are plenty of well-equipped tank factories from the Soviet era,” says Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall, from the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung”.
‘Ukraine must become independent in arms production’
The company wants to rent these and then manufacture NATO-standard vehicles on one or two production lines. Ukraine must eventually become independent in arms production. “The West cannot settle all scores forever, and President Zelenskyj agrees,” Papperger said.
Discussions about arms cooperation with Sweden
Speaking of Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian president arrived in Sweden on Saturday for a visit. Discussions with Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson include bilateral cooperation in the arms industry.
