Attack on Jehovah? – Leibnitz: Two cars exploded by explosives

Date:

In Leibnitz, South Styria, two cars were allegedly blown up with explosives on Friday evening. No one was injured. State security is now investigating whether there may be a religious background.

Between 6.45 pm and 9 pm, the as yet unknown perpetrators would have mounted the explosives on the cars. One of the explosives is said to have exploded around 8 p.m. A second went off when a vehicle owner had already driven a few kilometers around 9 p.m. The man was alone in the car. He was not injured, but the car was damaged.

According to police spokesman Markus Lamb, one should not imagine the explosion as in an action movie. “But you can already be gone if that happens while driving.”

Motive unclear
Why were the explosives placed? The police are currently investigating. “At the same time, a faith group of Jehovah’s Witnesses held a prayer meeting nearby, in which both car owners participated,” says Lamb. However, we are still in the dark about the motive. “Anything is possible. A conflict with the parking lot, something personal.”

Police “do not take the incident lightly,” Lamb said. A separate investigation group at the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution and Counterterrorism (LVT) is charged with the case. In the meantime, other branches of Jehovah’s Witnesses are also being informed and, if necessary, monitored.

“No Conflicts”
Mayor Michael Schumacher did not know anything about a conflict with the parking lots when asked by Krone. “I could not confirm that we had any problems or conflicts in this area. In Leibnitz we stand for peaceful coexistence and not opposition.”

The mayor said he was shocked by the incident. “Such an act is inexplicable. We have just been hit hard by the storm disaster. That something like this happens in such a difficult situation is unbelievable, words fall short.”
