According to the West African community of states ECOWAS, a date has already been set for the military intervention in Niger. The military junta that came to power there has also prepared for an “expansion of the war” – along with the allied states of Mali and Burkina Faso.
The three states have developed a defense strategy. The military staffs of the three countries met in the capital Niamey and decided on “concrete measures” if ECOWAS decides to “spread a war,” Niger state television said Saturday night.
But despite the decision for military intervention, all options, including a diplomatic solution, remain on the table, ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security Abdel-Fatau Musah stressed on Friday. First, an ECOWAS mission will go to Niger, Musah said. Failing this, the confederation will resort to a military solution to restore constitutional order in Niger. A date has already been set for a possible military action. However, this could not be stated publicly, said the ECOWAS Commissioner.
Resistance among the Nigerian people to intervention
In fact, there are still many unanswered questions when it comes to implementation. In Nigeria, parliament would first have to approve an operation. Resistance is strong, especially in the states bordering Niger. An intervention would also be very unpopular with the population. In Ghana, too, parliament has so far blocked the deployment of troops.
