A scary series of murders shakes up the homeless scene: what does that do to those living on the streets? Wolfgang M. for example. With the “Krone”, the 63-year-old talks about a life he didn’t want – and his place in society.
One of many parks in a residential area between the Gurtel and the Ringstrasse – for security reasons we are not writing the name. The meadows and wooden benches serve as sleeping places for twelve homeless people. “The advantage is that it is light here until 11 p.m.,” says Wolfgang M., pointing to the illuminated building that borders the park. Since the knife attacks that left two dead and one injured, security has been a major concern in the scene.
A little further on is a small children’s playground and in the evening young people sit with their drink on the stairs to the bus station. Before the interview I sit down on ‘his’ bench and participate a little in his life.
“crown”: What’s been going on here since a phantom has been haunting the homeless?
Wolfgang M.: Of course, we all think about what is happening now. Someone crosses a final inhibition threshold and stabs the most defenseless. For us, who are already at the bottom anyway. Attacking someone who is sleeping and vulnerable: I hate it!
