Religious motive? – Attack in Leibnitz: “No everyday explosives”

Date:

The convention of Jehovah’s Witnesses will take place in Vienna on Sunday with heightened security measures. Reason: On Friday, two explosive devices exploded on vehicles belonging to members of the religious community in Leibnitz, Styria. The investigations continue at full speed.

The large bilingual convention of Jehovah’s Witnesses at the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna continued on Sunday with heightened security measures. The day before, two explosive devices exploded on the cars of members of the religious community in South Styria. The connections are still unclear.

An unidentified person allegedly placed the explosives while the owners of the vehicles were at a Jehovah’s Witnesses prayer meeting. No one was injured. Whether there is a connection with the religious community is still being investigated. The National Office for the Protection of the Constitution and the Fight against Terrorism (LVT) has set up its own investigation team.

“No Everyday Explosives”
According to police spokesman Markus Lamb, a relatively large number of parts of the explosives have been secured. The individual parts must now be reassembled as far as possible for a reconstruction. It’s clear now that they “weren’t run-of-the-mill explosives or simple fireworks,” Lamb said, “They could have done more damage than they ultimately did.”

Investigators are hoping for eyewitnesses
It is still being analyzed as to why they apparently have not developed their full explosive potential. According to Lamb, the motive is still unclear. Therefore, environmental studies would now be carried out. Members of Jehovah’s Witnesses are also interviewed, as are neighbors. Investigators are still hoping for possible eyewitnesses who saw suspicious individuals.
