The chairman of the Pan-European Movement and the head of the Habsburg-Lorraine family, Karl Habsburg, believes Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) could one day testify as a key witness against Russian President Vladimir Putin. The media entrepreneur, who also runs a station in Ukraine, said: “I very much hope that one day Putin will stand before the International Criminal Court (note: in The Hague) for his crimes. Then Nehammer will be one of the main witnesses are against Putin, who will testify before the criminal court.”
“Then Chancellor Karl Nehammer will be one of the key witnesses against Putin, who will testify before the criminal court: ‘I told Putin very clearly at a very early stage what to think of his attitude and actions’. That is an important position he can take there,” Habsburg, who at the time had criticized the meeting between Putin and Nehammer in Moscow, said in an interview with the “Kurier”.
Putin is a criminal
“How do you negotiate with someone who accepts murders, rapes and constant shooting of children,” Habsburg confirms his skepticism. Putin is a criminal. “Putin has delegitimized the Russian government by actively pursuing these unimaginable human rights violations,” Habsburg said.
EVP chief Manfred Weber, on the other hand, described Nehammer’s journey as a “significant contribution to diplomacy”. Weber called the visit to Moscow courageous in the “Kurier” interview. “In times of speechlessness, it can’t be wrong to seek dialogue – if you have a clear point of view.” Nehammer made it clear before and after the visit to Putin “that he has a position. As far as I know, he spoke clearly with Putin.”
