Heavy fires are raging on the Italian holiday island of Elba. On Monday evening, 700 holidaymakers had to be evacuated after flames from a forest fire reached two campsites and some apartments between the towns of Rio Marina and Porto Azzurro. No one was injured, authorities said Tuesday.
Two Canadair helicopters and two firefighting aircraft were deployed to douse the flames. 14 hectares of forest were destroyed. Three houses were badly damaged. Arsonists are suspected. The flames were fanned by strong winds.
In the summer, economic interests are often under attack
According to experts, only five percent of fires in Italy are set by pyromaniacs acting out of a pure desire to destroy. Economic interests are usually behind the summer fires. Strict regulations prohibit building on burnt areas, but speculation is believed to be the main reason for the summer blaze.
