In 2022 Italy recorded a historic low in the number of births. Only 393,000 children were born last year, while the number of deaths nearly doubled to 713,000. A record low in the number of births is also expected for the current year.
In the first five months of 2023, 1.5 percent fewer births were reported than in the same period of 2023, according to information from the Istat statistics office. The number of births has been falling continuously for years and shows negative values in all regions.
Soon less than 59 million inhabitants
From January 1, 2014 to May 31, 2023, Italy’s population lost 1.561 million inhabitants, which is the sum of the populations of Milan and Brescia. The gap between births and deaths in Italy was negative before the pandemic and has widened since 2019. Italy’s population is expected to fall below the 59 million mark this year.
The decline in the birth rate is depressing the Italian economy
A concern for the government is the stability of the pension system given the low birth rate. The government around Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will deal with the issue in September.
