According to the German rescue organization Sea-Eye, the Italian authorities have again arrested the rescue ship “Sea-Eye 4”. The ship and crew will not be allowed to leave the port of Salerno in southern Italy for 20 days, the Regensburg-based organization said on Tuesday evening. In addition, a fine of 3,333 euros was imposed. A total of 114 people were rescued last week, according to Sea-Eye.
Sea-Eye said Italy accused the organization of “repeatedly violating a decree passed earlier this year requiring rescue organizations to return to port after just one mission. The “Sea-Eye 4” was already in early June Italy repaired.
‘People would have died’
His organization is “again accused of conducting multiple rescues,” said Gordon Isler, chairman of Sea-Eye. He added: “If we hadn’t, people would have died.”
The decree, according to which the organization determined the ‘Sea-Eye 4’, was passed by the right-wing government of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and passed into law by parliament in February.
Melonis Harter Asylum Course
Meloni took office in October, vowing to limit the number of migrants arriving on Italian shores. According to the decree, rescue ship passengers must disembark at their assigned ports – often hundreds of miles away from the rescue location.
