Greek forest fires – blaze: explosions, destroyed factories

Date:

The large forest and forest fires still hold Greece firmly in its grip. On Wednesday evening, explosions were heard in the Athenian suburb of Aspropyrgos, and factory buildings were destroyed by the flames. In addition, the evacuation of a suburb was ordered. In total, there are at least fifteen major or larger fronts in Greece.

The fires in northeastern Greece have spread further west during the night. As state broadcaster ERT reported this morning, there was now talk of a fire in the direction of the town of Komotini.

Fifth day in a row fire in the national park
The main fire front continued to rage in Dadia National Park towards the Turkish border for the fifth day in a row. The burned bodies of 18 migrants were found on Tuesday. “Since no one is missing, we assume they are illegal immigrants,” said fire service spokesman Giannis Artopoios.

The situation in Athens also remained tense; there it has been burning since Tuesday in the western suburb of Aspropyrgos.

The fire brigade fights the flames that spread to the mountains
It also continued to burn northwest of the city, towards the mountains of Parnitha. There, the fire brigade fought all night to prevent the flames from spreading to the mountains.

Parnitha is the green lung of Athens and is also a national park area. The fire service was deployed with 65 fire trucks and at daybreak the massive aerial operation started again with seven fire trucks and eight helicopters.

On Tuesday, the Greek fire service ordered the evacuation of the suburbs of Ano Liosia on the northwestern flank of Athens – the second in a month. Tens of thousands of people have been asked to leave their homes.

In total, there are at least fifteen major or larger fronts in Greece. The wildfire risk forecast for Wednesday is slightly better than for Tuesday, according to the civil defense.

The Meltemi wind, which is typical for this time of year, should no longer blow so stormy. However, there will still be local wind speeds of about 50 kilometers per hour, according to the Greek weather service. Accordingly, wildfire risk remained high to very high in many parts of the country.
