The video of a botched robbery of a tobacco shop in Graz caused a stir as far away as Germany. Now the criminal who had to leave without looting has been arrested: According to the police, the 35-year-old Styrian committed no fewer than seven robberies in Styria and Burgenland.
“Next time you should come earlier. The box office closes at 6:00.’ With this trick, the Graz tobacconist Marco Koller and his employee on August 9 upset the robber, who demanded money with a mask and a gun in his hand. In the end, the man left empty-handed. The video released by the police from the surveillance camera caused a media sensation beyond Austria’s borders.
Anonymous tip led to perpetrators
After that, the police received tips – an anonymous tip led to a 35-year-old suspect from the Weiz district. Investigations by the state detective agencies of Burgenland and Styria confirmed the suspicion, and the Eisenstadt public prosecutor ordered the arrest and search. Criminals from both states finally arrested the Styrians on Monday. Agents of the Cobra task force were also deployed.
During the house searches, investigators seized the suspected murder weapon (a toy gun that looks deceptively real) and parts of the clothing used in the crime. During his interrogation, the 35-year-old confessed to having committed seven robberies in Styria and Burgenland. In addition to the two tobacconists, four petrol stations (Graz-Ragnitz, Weiz, Preding bij Weiz and Kemeten) and a gambling café in Burgenland were also targeted. The man was masked in various ways, no one was injured.
There’s a man trapped in Graz
A day after the failed robbery in Graz-Mariatrost, the man attacked another gas station in the Oberwart district and another tobacco shop in Graz-St. Vit. Here he stole a mobile phone. The motive for the crime was lack of money. The man has already used up the loot. He is currently in prison in Graz-Jakomini and will be transferred to Eisenstadt. Since the first act was carried out in Burgenland, the local judiciary has been responsible.
