According to ex-president Dmitry Medvedev, Russia could annex the breakaway Georgian regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. The ex-president has presented himself as an agitator since the attack on Ukraine.
“The idea of joining Russia remains popular in Abkhazia and South Ossetia,” the deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council wrote in an article in the Russian newspaper Argumenty i Fakty on Wednesday.
“It could certainly be implemented if there are good reasons for it,” said Medvedev.
Independence of the South Ossetia region
Due to the merger of the Soviet Union, Georgia lost control of the breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. After Georgia attempted to take control of South Ossetia by force, Russian attacks erupted. However, in 2006, Moscow recognized the region as independent.
