73,000 hectares destroyed – Greek fires the biggest in EU history

Date:

According to the European Commission, the forest fires currently raging in Greece’s Alexandroupolis are said to be the largest in the history of the European Union. More than 73,000 hectares have burned so far, according to Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Janez Lenarcic.

Sixty firefighters are said to have been injured in the fires, says fire spokesman Giannis Artopoios. Thousands of firefighters are currently fighting the flames. In addition to the Greek forces, firefighters and pilots from Germany, Albania, France, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Sweden and Cyprus are also deployed.

Airspace for firefighting only
The spokesperson appealed to the media to get a better overview of the fire fronts and fire fighting. The media services used drones again and again. “The airspace above the affected areas is exclusively intended for extinguishing work,” he warned, referring to the numerous firefighting helicopters and aircraft fighting the fires from the air. Otherwise there is a risk of serious accidents.

The risk of fire in Greece remains high, but the positive is that the winds are easing, meteorologists said on Greek radio. On the other hand, the situation remained very difficult in central Greece near the village of Distomo and for the sixth day in a row on the Greek-Turkish border in the vicinity of the large port city of Alexandroupoli.

Around Athens it was a bit more relaxed on Wednesday evening. This was preceded by many hours of massive use of firefighting helicopters and firefighting aircraft with numerous firefighters and volunteers.
