Swimming weather can still be expected in large parts of Austria before the weekend. According to Geosphere Austria’s forecast, the change to cooler weather that many have been eagerly anticipating is already becoming apparent. The first thunderstorms will move through the country from the west on Friday afternoon. These will also reach the east on Sunday evening: maximum temperatures of up to 35 degrees can be expected there again at the weekend; in the west it is significantly cooler with a maximum of 19 degrees at the end of the week.
Friday morning it will be mostly sunny. Cumulus clouds will form from noon, especially in the western highlands, and the chance of thunderstorms will increase. In the south and east it will remain dry and mostly sunny. The early temperatures are between 15 and 22 degrees, maximum values rise to 36 degrees from west to east.
Heavy rain expected first in the west
In the east and west of Austria, the weekend starts very differently. In the west of the country, the first thunderstorms can be expected on Saturday morning in the run-up to a cold front. Locally heavy rain is possible during the day. In the east and south it will remain mostly dry and sunny until the evening. The early temperatures are between 16 and 22 degrees, the maximum temperature between 25 and 33 degrees.
Thunderstorms are not possible until Sunday in the east
The Eastern Alps area will be ravaged by a strong south-westerly current at high altitude on Sunday. During the night, showers and thunderstorms (sometimes heavy) will reach western Austria, which will spread during the day. The east is hardly affected. There is also a chance of thunderstorms in the evening. The wind will blow weak to moderate and temporarily increase from west to northwest during the day. The early temperatures are still warm with 14 to 21 degrees, the maximum daytime temperatures between 19 and 35 degrees.
On Monday, the weather is still uncertain for the time being
At the start of the working week it is cool and rainy between Vorarlberg and the Waldviertel and in Upper Carinthia. Summer conditions prevail in the east, with a tendency for local thunderstorms and showers. A characteristic low pressure area develops above the Gulf of Genoa, which also influences the weather in the eastern Alps. The wind is mainly moderate to strong from northerly directions. The temperatures in the morning are between ten and 22 degrees, the afternoon temperatures between 15 and 30 degrees. However, Monday’s weather comes with great uncertainty about the exact position of the air mass limit.
Thunderstorms and rain will become more frequent
The weather situation remains very uncertain on Tuesday as well. Current model information shows a low point over northern Italy, affecting weather in the Eastern Alps. This means that strong thunderstorms can still be expected in the eastern half of Austria during the night hours. During the day it will be heavily cloudy with regular rain and a chance of thunderstorms in the south and east. A strong westerly wind is blowing on the east side of the Alps. This also completes the change of air mass throughout Austria. The early temperatures are a cool ten to 18 degrees, the maximum daytime temperatures only reach 14 to 25 degrees.
