Espionage allegations: – The detention of US journalists in Russia has been extended

Date:

A court in Russia has extended the detention of American journalist Evan Gershkovich by three months. A spokesperson for the Moscow court announced on Thursday that the detention period would be extended to November 30. The Wall Street Journal reporter was arrested in March on espionage charges.

The Wall Street Journal reporter has been in a Moscow prison since he was arrested in March by the FSB secret service in Yekaterinburg, a city of more than a million people in the Urals. He is accused, among other things, of having collected information about the Russian arms industry.

Reporter denies allegations
The reporter, his family, his employer and the US authorities deny the espionage allegations. The 32-year-old is the first foreign journalist arrested in Russia on suspicion of espionage since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The US demands release
The appointment was again closed to the public, Moscow media reported. The reason is the ‘secret documents’ in the case. The United States is demanding the release of the 31-year-old. It is also considered possible that, as in the past, there will be a prisoner exchange between Moscow and Washington. Russia has repeatedly released criminals convicted in this way in the US.

If convicted, the American with Russian roots risks a prison sentence of 20 years. The case further strained already tense relations between Washington and Moscow.
