An invasion of flying ants has temporarily closed several beaches on France’s Atlantic coast.
After violent storms and the presence of numerous insects, all beaches in Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez have been temporarily closed to be on the safe side, the coastal town announced on Thursday. The warning was later withdrawn.
As the newspaper “Le Parisien” reported, the beaches in the neighboring towns of Bretignolles-sur-Mer and Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie and other places were also closed due to flying ants.
A number of tourists had already left the beaches themselves for fear of insect bites, the newspaper writes. The heat wave in large parts of France and the coming storms may have led to the accumulation of insects on the beaches.
