Almost half of Austrians order a delivery service every month, preferably pizza. According to the foodora Trend Monitor, published Thursday, half of those surveyed order when they don’t feel like cooking. Even when major events like Formula 1 are on TV, people like to consume what has been delivered. The Viennese population in particular is lazy when it comes to cooking: 60 percent order at least once a month, and one in five even weekly.
“The cuisine that the Austrian restaurants offer is diverse. From Italian pizza to Indian curry to delicious bowls, there is a wide variety of different dishes all over Austria. Delivery services combine exactly this diversity on one platform,” says Foodora Managing Director Herbert Haas.
Pizza, burgers or sushi
Pizza is number one in seven of the nine states. This is followed by cheeseburgers and maki. Men order slightly more often than women at 53 versus 42 percent. At 65 percent, young people have something delivered more often than older people, namely 31 percent. Almost 40 percent of the respondents like to order from the delivery service with family or friends on days off.
Still, people cannot live without home-cooked food: more than two-thirds of Austrians say they enjoy cooking. Traditional local cuisine is generally very popular. The favorite dish in Austria is the schnitzel. Depending on the state, this is followed by goulash, cheese spaetzle and minced meat. For the foodora Trend Monitor 2023, 1,633 Austrians were interviewed as part of a representative survey and internal data were evaluated.
