On Monday afternoon, 53 refugees were found in a truck with a trailer on the Westautobahn (A1) near Böheimkirchen (St. Pölten district). According to police spokesman Stefan Loidl, there were 42 men, eight women and three children of predominantly Syrian descent.
The truck driver, a Turkish national, was arrested. The vehicle was clearly specially prepared to tow people, he said.
All refugees applied for asylum
The truck combination from Turkey was stopped around 2:30 p.m. at a closed rest area in a westerly direction. The driver, born in 1984, has been arrested. The refugees all applied for asylum.
The criminal investigation department of the state of Lower Austria, human trafficking/smuggling department, took over the further investigation. “Today” initially reported online about the arrest of the refugees on Monday.
