Hundreds of volunteer firefighters in Upper Austria had another short night. Around midnight, a storm front from Bavaria and Salzburg reached Upper Austria and quickly spread across the state south of the Danube. People were also injured in the storm.
Within a few minutes, numerous calls from the district of Braunau were received by the Upper Austrian provincial warning center, giving a first impression of the approaching storm front. In order to handle the large number of emergency calls, the National Warning Center was immediately expanded with extra staff. At 01:00 there were already about 80 fire brigades present.
Storm gusts up to 130 km/h
This storm put a lot of pressure on the fire brigades in the affected areas – from Braunau and Vöcklabruck via Gmunden and Kirchdorf to Linz – because wind gusts of up to 130 km/h knocked down numerous trees on the roads and covered power lines and roofs. The enormous force of the wind was reflected, among other things, in the blowing over of vehicles. Locally, severe thunderstorms also led to flooding, making it necessary for the emergency services to intervene.
Sailors rescued from the lake
In Frauenstein in the district of Kirchdorf an der Krems, the roof structure of a residential building was partially covered, in Micheldorf in Upper Austria, wind gusts of up to 122 km/h swept away a garden shed and numerous construction site safety devices. In Leonstein, a tree blocked the roadway, which was removed by the fire brigade, and in Kirchdorf an der Krems, a tree also blocked the road.
In Attnang-Puchheim, a man was hit by a garage door that had been pushed open by the storm. He had to go to the hospital. At the Traunsee, sailors had to get to safety before the storm. In the districts of Braunau, Vöcklabruck and Gmunden, about 3,000 people were without electricity in the morning.
