A heavily armed man opened fire at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York on Saturday, killing 10 people. Three other people were injured. Mayor Byron Brown said the 18-year-old gunman has been arrested. A racist motive is also being investigated; Governor Kathy Hochul spoke of a “terrorist act”.
The perpetrator is not from this community, Brown explained at a news conference. “The gunman traveled for hours from outside this community to commit this crime against the people of Buffalo.” What started as a beautiful day turned into a terrible day. “A day that breaks the heart of every member of our community,” said Brown. “This is a day of great pain for our community. We cannot allow this hateful person to divide us or our country.”
Assassin wanted to shoot himself
According to the police, the suspect was wearing a helmet and protective clothing, was heavily armed and opened fire in the parking lot of the supermarket. He filmed the act and broadcast it live on a social network. According to police, the alleged perpetrator walked down the aisles in the supermarket and shot his victims in the head. A guard shot the 18-year-old, but the bullets lodged in his body armor. The guard was then killed by the young attacker.
As Police Chief Jopseph Gramaglia explained, the assailant held a gun to his own neck when officers stopped him in a front room of the supermarket. However, the officers were able to persuade the gunman to surrender. There is “certain evidence” pointing to a racist act, it said. Investigators examined an ideological manifesto of the alleged perpetrator that had surfaced on the internet, in which he expressed racist ideas that could have motivated his crime. The dead and one other injured were African Americans. The arrested person is white.
Weapon obtained legally but modified
The New York state governor described the deadly shooting as terrorism. The perpetrator is a right-wing extremist who has committed a “terrorist act”, Hochul said at a press conference on Saturday evening. She sincerely hopes that this person who has just committed a hate crime will spend the rest of his life behind bars. Hochul said the murder weapon was obtained legally, but has been modified.
