After a massive spread of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) is suspected in the Ottenstein reservoir in the Waldviertel (Lower Austria), the district authority advises bathing until there is complete clarification.
The water samples were taken in the EU bathing area near the Lichtenfels ruins in Zwettl.
Possible consequences: nausea, fever, diarrhoea, rash, paralysis
“If people swallow large amounts of water or enter the airways, nausea, fever, vomiting, diarrhea, skin rashes, collapse or signs of paralysis can occur. Skin absorption of cyanotoxins is unlikely, but skin irritation, inflammation or allergic reactions may occur. In severe cases, gastrointestinal inflammation, respiratory disease and liver damage can also occur.
