After ESC victory – steel mills could have been targeted by incendiary bombs

Date:

Russian troops allegedly fired phosphorus bombs at the Azov steel plant in Mariupol. These bombs can cause devastating damage and are prohibited. A deputy of the Ukrainian city council also published photos with inscriptions on bombs. The Russian army is said to have reacted to Ukraine’s victory in the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC).

According to Ukrainian sources, the Azov steel plant in Mariupol was hit by phosphorus bombs. These are incendiary bombs that can ignite on contact with oxygen and cause serious damage. Its use is prohibited. “Hell has come to earth. To Azovstal,” Petro Andryushchenko, deputy of the Mariupol City Council, wrote on Sunday. He also released a video of aerial footage showing a hail of fire falling on the steel mill. The origin of the recordings is unclear, they could not be verified at first.

About 1000 defenders in the steel mill
About 1,000 defenders hide in the steel mill and refuse to surrender. Artillery shelling of the Mariupol industrial zone and bombs with inscriptions can also be seen in the photos published by the councilor. The suspected bombs read in Russian: “Kalush, as requested! Auf Azovstal” and in English “Help Mariupol – Help Azovstal now” (in German: Helft Mariupol – Helft Azovstal immediately”, dated May 14. The singer of the band Kalush Orchestra, who won the ESC, said these words on stage in Turin.

Russia was excluded from ESC
Russia was excluded from the Eurovision Song Contest because of the war in Ukraine. State television was not allowed to show the show. It is unclear whether there is a connection between the alleged phosphorus bomb attack and the bombs with inscriptions.

The military is currently fighting in the east and west of the country, as well as the area around Snake Island in the Black Sea. 150 Ukrainian soldiers were killed in airstrikes in the Donetsk region on Sunday evening. Russian troops attacked military infrastructure in the Lviv region early Sunday morning. So far, nothing is known about deaths or injuries there.
