The city of Rome is currently battling the increasing number of rats and mice around the famous Colosseum. In recent days, images and videos of rats and mice rummaging through rubbish, leftover food and plastic bottles have circulated on social media in the tourist-popular amphitheater in the heart of the Italian capital.
The city council immediately took rodent control measures, a statement from the city said on Saturday. After the first reports of sightings of rats, the necessary steps were taken.
“Situation absolutely under control”
The situation at the Colosseum is “absolutely under control,” Rome environmentalist Sabrina Alfonsi said, according to the statement. The employees of the Roman garbage collection service and landscape protection have taken measures in recent days. Traps have been placed and holes in the green areas and manholes have been checked. Above all, the litter lying around was collected and disposed of. Together with the board of the Colosseum, they now want to take further steps in the fight against the rats.
According to the city council, an estimated seven million rats live in Rome. According to environmentalist Alfonsi, the area around the Colosseum and nearby Colle Oppio Park is not usually a “hot spot” for rats. But the heat of recent days and the influx of tourists this summer have resulted in large amounts of rubbish, leftover food and plastic bottles being left behind in the area.
