NATO calls for consensus to make progress in bringing Finland and Sweden into alliance

NATO issued an appeal this Sunday towards consensus and unity for what Finland and Sweden can join the Atlantic alliance. However, Turkey has shown its opposition and has threatened to block the process, alleging that the two Nordic countries have in the past given refuge to “terrorists” of the PKK

Foreign ministers of the 30 states that make up NATO will meet this weekend in berlin (Germany) with Finland and Sweden as guests; the central theme: the inclusion of these two countries in the alliance.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has sparked fear in these two hitherto neutral states, especially Finland, which borders Russia. the Finnish president, Sauli Niinistorecently communicated to the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, who will make a formal application to join NATO. In that sense, Putin warned him that this decision is a… “error”because there is no danger threatening Finland.

In this regard, the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, went on to denounce the “total hybrid war” declared by the West against Russia. That’s why he warned that “we will all bear the consequences without exception”.

However, to join NATO, Finland and Sweden must: convince turkeywhich maintains a position contrary to that of the other 29 states, thanks to the support of these two countries to the Kurds.

In any case, the Finnish Prime Minister has assured that the talks so far with Turkey are over “positive” and that they will find a solution.

The working dinner took place last night and will continue next Sunday from 2.30pm.
